Клятва, которую приносят в начале каждого школьного дня при подъеме флага миллионы американских школьников. Текст был написан Ф. Беллами [Bellamy, Francis], председателем Комитета по национальным школьным программам празднования 400-летия открытия Америки в 1890. Утвержден в настоящем виде Конгрессом [ Congress, U.S.] в 1954. Произносится наизусть учащимися школ при подъёме флага в начале каждого школьного дня: «Обязуюсь хранить верность флагу Соединённых Штатов Америки и Республике, которую он олицетворяет, единой перед Богом, неделимой, свободной и справедливой ко всем» [‘I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all’]. Название государственного флага США [ Flag of the United States]. Утвержден решением Континентального конгресса [ Continental Congresses] 14 июня 1777, которое гласило: "Флаг Соединенных Штатов представляет собой тринадцать полос, поочередно красных и белых, с группой в тринадцать белых звезд на синем поле, представляющих собой новое созвездие" ["The flag of the United States shall be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white, with a union of thirteen stars of white on a blue field, representing a new constellation"]. 13 чередующихся красных и белых полос символизируют 13 бывших колоний [ Thirteen Colonies], объединившихся в 1776 в единое государство. 7 Hopkinson, Francis
(1737-1791) Хопкинсон, ФрэнсисЮрист, политический деятель, композитор, музыкант, художник, поэт-сатирик. Был делегатом Континентального конгресса [ Continental Congresses], его подпись стоит под Декларацией независимости [ Declaration of Independence]. После войны за независимость [ War of Independence] был федеральным судьей. Чрезвычайно разносторонний человек: первым в США стал сочинять музыку (песни, кантаты, пьесы для клавикорда). Книга "Семь песен" ["Seven Songs"] (1788) - первый сборник произведений американского композитора. Создал эскиз герба штата Нью-Джерси, работал над эскизом государственного флага [ Flag of the United States] (1788). Литературное творчество носит преимущественно агитационный и сатирический характер: резкие грубоватые сатиры на англичан, призывавшие к борьбе, баллада "Битва бочонков" ["The Battle of the Kegs"] (1778), сатирический памфлет "Славная история, рассказанная Питером Горемыкой, эсквайром" ["A Pretty Story: Written by Peter Grievous, Esq."] (1774).
